  5. [IMG] Presentation of participants in the 16th International Competition (2005)

An innovative experience of municipal cooperation between the cities of Granollers and Tarragona begins.

The Councillor for Festivities of the City Council of Tarragona, Carles Sala, the first deputy mayor of the City Council of Granollers, Francesc Sala, and the representative of the main sponsor, Carrefour, Robert Esteva, presented on 3rd March the six companies participating in the 16th International Fireworks Displays Competition of Tarragona, that will be held between 4th and 9th July 2005.

Nineteen companies from places like the Valencian country, Aragon, the Community of Madrid, Portugal, Italy, UK, Argentina, China and Japan applied to enter for the competition. Last year, most of the participants were either rather new companies that tried to make themselves known at the competition in Tarragona, or more experienced companies that had never fired in Spain and wanted to get promotion from Tarragona. Practically there was none of the oldest companies. However, this year, we have the recovery of a wide range of pyrotechnic companies with a long curriculum and many prizes. The selection committee found it hard to leave some companies out.

Carles Sala pointed out that, apart from the rising prestige of the competition, recognized by the media and by the business sector, the reasons for this difference are basically two. On the one hand, the improvement of the budget to take part in the competition, that has risen to the following amounts:

    • 16,200 (sixteen thousand two-hundred euros, VAT included), for companies with headquarters in Spain within the Iberian peninsula.
    • 18,700 (eighteen thousand seven-hundred euros, VAT included), for companies with headquarters outside Spain or the Iberian peninsula.
On the other hand, the improvement of prizes. This way, the first prize has risen to 8,000 euros, while at the same time the organization has included a special prize thanks to the cooperation agreement between the City Councils of Tarragona and Granollers.

In this sense, Francesc Sala from Granollers explained that the company from the Iberian peninsula with the best classification at the competition in Tarragona will also get the special prize “Festa Major de Granollers (Granollers local festivities) – Trofeu Blancs I Blaus (White and Blue Trophy)”, awarded by the City Council of Granollers, and the firing of the fireworks display to close the local festivities of this town, for an amount of 13,920 euros (VAT included), which will take place on Sunday 28th August 2005. The White and Blue local festivity of Granollers is one of the celebrations that has lately grown most in importance both due to the popular participation and to the prestige within the calendar of festivities in Catalonia and Catalan-speaking countries.

Characteristics of the six selected companies

Carles Sala explained that this is the first time in Tarragona when (in the international section) there have been more Asian companies than European. On other occasions there were a Chinese, a Japanese company, or one from Hong Kong, but not at the same time. Antoni Caballer, Zaragozana and Romualdo Parente are three historic companies that were founded in 1877, 1866 and at the end of the 18th century respectively. The Chinese Lidu and the Japanese Tamaya are younger companies but with a long curriculum of prizes.

Finally, with the intention to give an opportunity to newer companies, the Valencian Pirotècnia d’Altura, managed by Antoni Zarzoso, is presented as a company of Valencian style (which the public enjoy a lot) that wants to make itself known from the competition in Tarrgona. In fact, the youngest company last year, the Valencian Arco Iris, ended up as the revelation of the 2004 competition. Two of the six companies are firing in the competition of Tarragona for the first time: the Japanese Tamaya and the Valencian d’Altura.

Two of the selected companies participated in the latest Champion of Champions Competition in 1999: Antoni Caballer and Lidu. However, neither has got a place yet for the second Champion of Champions competition that will be held next year and which is expected to be excellent, with the participation of Pirogestion (related to Igual), Ricardo Caballer, Turis and the Italian Francesco Pagano (IPON) and La Rosa Lorenzo.

The competition, even more loaded with pyrotechnic material

The press conference ended with the technical information. So as to have an idea of the fact that the companies are coming with all their artillery ready and with all the available resources, just say that this year 7,711 net Kg. of pyrotechnic material will be used (compared to last year’s 5,600 net Kg of pyrotechnic product).

    The firing order

On Wednesday 9th March 2005 at 12:30 at the conference hall of the Town Hall of Tarragona, there was a draw for the firing order of the companies taking part in the next Fireworks Displays Competition that will take place in Tarragona from 4th to 9th July.

The draw was led by the Councillor for Festivities and Youth, Carles Sala, and representatives from four of the participating companies were present: Lidu Fireworks, Pirotecnia Zaragozana, Pirotecnia Antonio Caballer and Pirotècnia d’Altura.

Robert Esteve was also present as the representative of Carrefour, the competition’s main sponsor.

    Monday 4th July, 22:30
    LIDU FIREWORKS CORPORATION LTD

    Artistic Director: Deng Qung Mao
    From Nantxang, China

The participation of Lidu Fireworks in 1998 meant a huge intercontinental jump of the Tarragona competition, that for the first time was bringing an Asian company after all the other European participants. Lidu Fireworks won that competition and also took part in the special Champion of Champions contest in 1999, when they got third place. That occasion went down in history. Lidu is a huge company with three great fireworks manufacturing factories. Due to its extension and to its human resources (about 2,000 workers) as well as to their production, it’s one of the biggest in China. From there, Lidu exports to all over the world: Japan, Australia, USA, Europe, etc. The quality and perfection of the forms designed by Lidu and the brightness of their colours are probably their greatest assets. In China they have fired and still fire at the most important events. For example, during the annexation ceremony of Hong Kong to China, at the Asian Games of Shanghai, at several exhibitions in Tiannmen square, like the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Popular Republic of China. Their record includes the first prize at the International Pyromusical Displays Competition in Hull (Canada) in 1996, second prize at the competition in Donostia in 1987 and other participations in San Remo (Italy), Macau, Quebec, Germany, Switzerland and USA.

    Tuesday 5th July, 22:30
    PIROTECNIA ZARAGOZANA, S.A.

    Artistic Director: José Antonio Llera
    Saragossa (Aragon
    )

This is the fourth time this old company from Saragossa has taken part in the competition of Tarragona. Founded in 1866, it’s one of the oldest in Spain. This is the company that has fired most times at the International Competition of San Sebastian, where they won first prize in 1964 and second prize on five other occasions, the latest in 2002. Their speciality are candles and cylinder shells, many of which are exported, mainly to France, UK, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands and Denmark. Today Zaragozana is the first exporting company in Spain. They got first prize at the Burgos competition in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2002; first prize in Móstoles (Madrid) from 1998 to 2003; first prize at Vitoria-Gasteiz from 1999 to 2002; first prize at the pyromusical competition in St.Brevin Les Pins (France) in 1999; second prize in Blanes from 1997 to 2000 and first prize at the San Fermín competition in Pamplona in 2000 and 2001. They also have the first prize at the Belgian competition of Knokke and the first at the French competitions of Cannes and Capdenac. Also, in 2003 they won the Prize to the most Ecological Pyrotechnic Company at the International Competition of Bilbao. Their participation in Tarragona brought them two second prizes in 2000 and 2002. They last came to Tarragona in 2003.

    Wednesday 6th July, 22:30
A.P.E. DI PARENTE ROMUALDO SPETTACOLI PIROTECNI

    Artistic Director: Romualdo Parente
    Bergantino, Italy

For the first time in the competition of Tarragona, a company belonging to the pyrotechnicians family of the Parentes, that dates from the end of the 18th century, when they settled in the area of Puglia, in the south of the country. Generation after generation, the Parentes have always been on the job making the typical Italian shells, so much appreciated internationally and in Tarragona as well. Today, Romualdo Parente’s factory, the “Antiga Pirotecnia Emiliana” (A.P.E.) has a surface of 35,000 square metres. Among their usual participations in Italy we find the important Redeemer’s Festivity in Venice (with a display that is extraordinarily respectful with the natural and urban environment) and the New Year celebration at Castell dell’Ovo in Naples (the pyrotechnic epicentre of Italian manufacturing). As far as their international performances is concerned, they got first prize at the Vancouver competition in Canada and at Cape Town in South Africa. Also, they have fired in Toronto and Hull (both in Canada), Quebec and Johannesburg (South Africa). Romualdo Parente was the first Italian and foreign company that fired a diurnal display during the Valencian “fallas”, in the style of the Catalan “tronades” and the Valencian “mascletades”. They fired from the Malvarrosa beach and this kind of display has become indispensable during the festivities of Valencia. They are coming to Tarragona for the first time with the intention to reach and surpass the previous success of other Italian companies like Francesco Pagano, Martarello and La Rosa Lorenzo.

    Thursday 7th July, 22:30
    PIROTÈCNIA ANTONI CABALLER S.A.

    Artistic Director: Miguel Zamorano Caballer
    Moncada, Valencian country

The origins of this company date back to 1877, which means long and accurate experience in the world of pyrotechnics. Today, the fifth generation of the Caballer family is in charge. The present name of the company dates from 1922, when the Spanish king Alphonse XIII gave Antoni Caballer authorisation.

As outstanding performances: in 1909 they took part in the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona; during the forties in the 20th century they participated in the creation of the Valencian “Nit del Foc” (fire night); the 1953 display on occasion of the coronation of the English Queen Elizabeth II; the display in 1977 to welcome the Spanish monarchs in Monaco; or the pyromusical display organized together with the Municipal Band of the city of Valencia in 2002 on occasion of the centenary of that association. They have participated with their special effects in films like “55 Days in Peking”, “The Battle of Ardenes” and “The Three Musketeers”. They won the International Fireworks Prize in Monaco in 1976; first prize in Bilbao in 1985 and 1986; first prize in Donostia in 1989 and 1991 and the prize from the public in 1992; first prize in Toronto (Canada) in 1990, 1991, 1998 and 1999 and in Vancouver (Canada) in 1990, 1991, 1998, 2000 and 2001; first prize in Acapulco (Mexico) in 1994; first prize in Quebec (Canada) in 1995 and 1998 ; first prize in Macau in 1997; first prize at the first competition in New York in 1997; first prize at the first Johannesburg competition (South Africa) in 1999; and finally, first prize at the Ignis Brunesis competition (Czech republic) in 2003.

They have participated in Tarragona five times and won first prize in 1990 and 1991. In 1994 they fired a wonderful display during the Champion of Champions competition. They were here last in 2001

    Friday 8th July, 22:30
    TAMAYA KITAHARA ENKATEN CO., LTD.

    Artistic director: Yuki Murai
    Shinei machi Isesaki City, Japan

Japanese fireworks started in the 17th century, during the Edo period. Since then, they have developed a lot and today they combine artisan manufacturing with the use of computers, as it is the case of the company that this year is coming to our competition for the first time. Tamaya Kitahara Enkaten has fired, apart from Japan, in China, USA and Europe. Among important performances they have: displays during the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Popular Republic of China in Liuyang, Hunan and in Beijing, both in 1999; at Chinese pyrotechnic festivals in Lian Yang and Shanghai, both in 2000 and 2001; Hunan in 2001 and 2002; Dalian and Jilin in 2001; in Singapore in 2000 and in Hawaii in 2001. Also, they have won prizes at international competitions like the Mercè in Barcelona in 2003 (first prize) or at the second Qatar competition in 2004, where they also won first prize. They are the second Japanese company that has fired in Tarragona.

    Saturday 9th July, 22:30
    PIROTÈCNIA D’ALTURA

    Artistic Director: Paulino Zarzoso Lara
    Altura, Valencian country

The International Competition of Tarragona has always been aware of new and innovative proposals, especially those from Valencia. In this case the competition is giving way to the company from Castelló Pirotècnia d’Altura, that has been working for three generations to take the art of pyrotechnics to many celebrations. Pirotècnia d’Altura was founded in 1930 by Antonio Zarzoso Carot and at the beginning developed in the area of Teruel and Valencian country. Later, with the second generation, Antonio Zarzoso Navarrete widened their area of influence all over Spain. The present factory was built in 1981 so as to leave the urban centre of Altura and adapt to the new safety measures required by state regulations. This company usually fires at the Town Hall square of Valencia during the internationally known “Fallas”. Also, they usually fire at the “mascletaes” competition during the Magdalena festivities in Castelló, where they won first prize. They have also taken part in important festivities like the St.Joan “Fogueres” (bonfires) in Alicante, the Carnival of Aguilas in Murcia, St.Mateu’s festivities in Logroño or the Sanfermines in Pamplona. They are firing for the first time in the competition of Tarragona.

Fireworks by the Mediterranean in Tarragona
16th International Fireworks Displays Competition. Tarragona

    www.tarragona.piroart.com
    www.tarragona.feuerwerk.net

The International Fireworks Displays Competition of Tarragona, the reference competition on the Mediterranean coasts, is gathering six remarkable companies from all over the world that will compete for six nights at the Miracle beach of Tarragona with the objective of taking to their countries the Venus prize, which will vouch for them as renowned companies at international level. Some of the most important assets of this competition are: the long list of companies that every year try to take part in it, the brilliant curricula of the participants, the accurate organization and the really beautiful setting at the Punta del Miracle, which has been praised by outstanding experts and journalists, many of whom are interested in becoming members of the official jury.

This year and for the first time, we're having more Asian than European companies (in the intenational section). On other occasions we had had a Chinese or a Japanese company, but never at the same time. The national companies Antoni Caballer and La Zaragozana and the Italian de Romualdo Parente are three historical companies, as they were founded in 1877, 1866 and at the end of the 18th century respectively. The Chinese Lidu and the Japanese Tamaya are younger companies but with an outstanding list of prizes. Finally, with the intention to give opportunities to newer companies, the Valencian Pirotècnia d'Altura, managed by Antonio Zarzoso, is introduced as a Valencian-style company (which the public enjoy a lot) that intends to use the competition as a means of making itself known. Actually, last year's younger company, the Valencian Arco Iris, ended up as a revelation to the competition in 2004. Two of the six companies are firing in Tarragona for the first time: the Japanese Tamaya and the Valencian d'Altura.

The competition, more loaded with pyrotechnic material

As far as technical information is concerned, the companies are coming with all their artillery and all their human and technical resources available. Just as an example, from the 5,600 net Kilogrammes of pyrotechnic products used last year, we're passing on to 7,711 net Kilos this year. The organisation foresees that, after the six displays, 360,000 people will have been watching the fireworks. Precisely this high popular participation makes the citizens such protagonists as the fireworks designers themselves, in one of the best examples of public response during the year at pyrotechnic, festive and cultural performances on the Mediterranean. From mid-afternoon, thousands of people arrive at the beach and the promenade and settle their portable tables, chairs and towels in order to have dinner there later on. When the fireworks display is over they also vote with voting papers, phone sms or via internet.

Precisely one of this year's improvements refers to the Emergency Action Plan, that involves an amount of 96 people from the police department, medical, rescue teams, firemen and organisation. Fort he first time, evacuation corridors have been established as well as an increase on the amount of medical service available.

Among the experts in the jury this year, we have the Parisian journalist Dominique Lajeunesse, the German Markus Klatt, the Valencian Victor Soriano, and the also German Alexander von Oertzen, from the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, an organisation that watches over pyrotechnic security in Germany.

50 Bomben in 3 Sekunden geschossen.

  10. First two displays: LIDU/China and ZAROGAZANA/Spain

    Dear Pyros,

after the first two shows of the 16th International Fireworks Competition in Tarragona were shot I can say that the organisation of this years competition is as perfect as the years before. After last years problems with the local police on strike during the competition till now everything runs very smooth and even the weather was not as bad as expected for the first days.

So, this years competition in Tarragona keeps what it promises every year: a selection of awesome and fantastic fireworks displays which all have their own artistic rhythm and beauty of effects. Today A.P.E Parente from Italy will show their imagination of a perfect display. We already saw large, large cylindrical shells (multibreak and stutata) at the firing area so I assume that we are allowed to expect an Italian show at its best.

Since I am a jury member it would not be fair to the following participating companies if I would would post pro and contras here before the official results will be published at the end. I will write my descriptions and publish video sequences of all shows in the week after the competition.

  11. The official results

So, I just returned from Tarragona and I really have to say:

whoooow - the competition this year was simply wonderful! Although the weather was not that good in the evenings and therefore the show of Antonio Caballer was drowned in smoke and the show of Lidu and Altura were somehow effected by smoke too (but not to much), the quality and size of this years International Fireworks Competition displays were simply great - all spectators have to deeply thank ALL companies taking part in this years competition. ALL companies showed really beautiful shows and made the competition once again to a perfect spectacle enjoying the public and the jury! THANKS A LOT.

Today I publish the official results of the jury before writing about all shows and give the promised photos. As maybe most of you know, each jury member (there were 17 members of the jury this year) has to vote for lots of categories at the end of every show.
Some examples for the catagories are: "Starting", "Conjunction with the environment", "Purity and intensity of colours", "Dimensions", "Sonority", "Script of the show" and "Final crescendo".
So, the members all vote (for their own and alone) with grades (points) from 0-10 (where 10 is best) immediatly after a fireworks display was shot. There is no possibility to change one's oppinion after voting for a show the next day. In the end of the competition, all points (votings) of all categories of all jury members are counted together for all shows and this result represents the official judging of the jury. Since all jury members have their own oppinion on how fireworks displays should be shot, since they all have their own experiences and preferences and they do not exchange their definite results till all shows were shot, the jury members do not know who is the winner till the very last evening when all points are counted together. This just for your information how the following results were "caused":

    1. Place
    (Ø 8,73 points)
TAMAYA KITAHARA ENKATEN CO., LTD. - Japan

    2.
    Place (Ø 8,61 points)
A.P.E. DI PARENTE ROMUALDO SPETTACOLI PIROTECNI - Italy

    3.
    Place (Ø 8,29 points)
PIROTÈCNIA ANTONI CABALLER S.A. - Spain (Valencia)

    4.
    Place (Ø 7,82 points)
LIDU FIREWORKS CORPORATION LTD. - China

    5.
    Place (Ø 7,47 points)
PIROTÈCNIA ZARAGOZANA, S.A. - Spain (Zaragoza)

    6.
    Place (Ø 7,19 points)
    PIROTÈCNIA D'ALTURA - Spain (Valencia)

As you can see the results for the companies are all very close - so in the end for my oppinion there is not a real single winner and not a real single last place. All shows had their own dynamic and rhythm, all had very good and more bad parts, all had different qualities here and there, but all were simply great fireworks displays! So congratulations to all companies and thank you all for your efforts to present these fine fireworks to the public!

BTW - I will publish the result for the Public Award (the spectators could vote for all shows via email, internet and directly after a show on the beach) as soon as it is announced.

I will present my informations/conclusion of the single shows and the competition in total with lots of setup photos and video sequences of all shows tomorrow (Monday).

  12. Results of online voting

Here are the results of the online voting on www.PIROART.com

    1. Place (Ø 7,36)
    LIDU - China (4.7.2005)

    2. Place (Ø 6.01)
    TAMAYA - Japan (8.7.2005)

    3. Place (Ø 5,74)
    ZARAGOZANA - Spain/Zaragoza (5.7.2005)

    4. Place (Ø 5,72)
    A.P.E PARENTE - Italy (6.7.2005)

    5. Place (Ø 5,64)
    ALTURA - Spain/Valencia (9.7.2005)

    6. Place (Ø 5,39)
    Antonio Caballer - Spain/Valencia (7.7.2005)

So, one can see that the public spectators can clearly differ from the official jury in their firework likings. I would assume that two facts may have "manipulated" the spectators:

LIDU was the first company to shoot and there were not that much visitors on the beach as at the following days. Maybe these fewer spectators and the first big display of the competition lead to a more "enthusiastic" voting where on the following days the comparison between the displays calmed down the emotions.

The display of ANTONIO CABALLER was spoiled ("destroyed") be the smoke because the wind blew all the smoke towards the spectators. This may have led to a disappointment of the spectators resulting in fewer points for AC.

The above mentioned things are just my speculations trying to explain some differences in the results of the official jury and the online voting...

  13. [04.07.2005] LIDU FIREWORKS CORPORATION LTD. - China

As already mentioned above the first display was shot by LIDU from China. During the display a strong wind was coming from the opposite side of the spectators so the smoke of the effects were blown towards them. This was even worse as a high air humidity caused lot of smoke. But the view was not that much effected as one could have feared (except in the finale) and so everyone could enjoy a large Chinese display with lots of beautiful shells. As the ship with most of the large caliber shells did not arrive on time in Tarragona the display had a handfull of 200mm shells but instead of more shells of this size (as announced) they used lots of 125-180mm shells. The quality of these shells were very good and the rhythm of the show was continious from the very beginning till the end with a massive finale which was very much appreciated by the audience. The single sequences of the display opened with large Peonies and through the whole display waves of Peonies and later Chrysanthemums represented the most common way of shooting. At many times the shells in the air were supported by small caliber cakes, which of course could not fill all the space in the air and led to enormeous amounts of smoke. In this "typical" Chinese display no roman candles nor mines nor one shot comtes were used at all.

The display was covered by the well known Valencian company Ricardo Caballer and it was shot digitally with Pyrodigital. All of the approx. 1900 cues directly lead into a shell so almost each effect was fired without pyrotechnic delay. Although the effort for this kind of firing must have been huge, LIDU did not use the endless cable lines for typical digital stepper sequences but for excact firing of 3, 5 or more shells at a time and they used the wideness of the lower part of the area for large dimension of the air. In fact they had 9 groups of mortar racks positioned in this lower part and 5 positions of cake boxes on the upper stage of the firing area.

For me the most impressive and/or beautiful pictures of the show consisted of a calm sequence with green glittering willows and a sequence where only brocade willows with small red and green stars were shot away from the land onto the Mediterranian sea.

  14. [05.07.2005] PIROTÈCNIA ZARAGOZANA, S.A. - Spain (Zaragoza)

For the second evening we feared rain because of large dark clouds in the sky. But in the end the weather conditions were good with a heavy wind coming from the sea blowing all the smoke to the side away from the spectators.
The display of ZARAGOZANA from Spain seemed to be even a little bigger as the one from China. In fact it was with almost 24 minutes much longer than the 19 minutes of the Chinese display...

ZARAGOZANA is famous for fantastic colors, especially used in roman candles, and as one hoped or expected they used a wide veriaty of colors in mines, candles and shells and the brillance of the effects were perfect. As the Chinese did not shoot candles, ZARAGOZANA shot a lot of candles but did not have aquatic shells which had the Chinese shown at their best. The other big difference between the two shows is, that the Chinese followed somehow a "story" through the display which means, that they had a continous way of shooting with the same rhythm till the end. ZARAGOZANA instead shot a "typical Spanish" display which was clearly devided into lots of pictures and sequences which all had their own rhythm starting with mines/candles, followed by small caliber shells in the same color/effect above and every picture was concluded with a wave of large caliber shells on top of the former effects. This way of shooting fills the sky in several levels and therefore the occupation of space was great. As mentioned ZARAGOZANA showed an awesome veriaty of deep or pastel colors and most times the quality of the shells (symmetry, dimension) was very good too. For me only some typical Italian shells showed at the following evening by A.P.E. PARENTE had a better quality then those of ZARAGOZANA.

In the end this displayed failed to convince the jury. Why? Maybe it was the long length, combined with a somtimes slow shooting, which made the whole display wonderful relaxing and enjoyable, but not "impressive" as it is liked in Tarragona. This even could not by wiped away by a fantastic massive finale. But though, some other jury members and I am sure lots of the spectators and me enjoyed a beautiful show with intensive colors and effects...

  15. [06.07.2005] A.P.E. DI PARENTE ROMUALDO SPETTACOLI PIROTECNI - Italy

The third show of A.P.E. PARENTE was welcomed by Tarragona with very good weather conditions. The sun burned hot during the day, but all the day and at evening time a strong wind blew in the correct direction and all smoke was taken away from the spectators behind the effects. As one (me ;)) hoped, Remualdo and his team brought lots of small, medium, big and huge sized Italian cylindrical shells to load into the mortars. Besides the Italian material they had Chinese shells to fill the show.

The show started with heavy multibreak salute shells to wake up the audience. After this traditional Italian opening the show somehow lost speed and the first half of the show dripped with single or double shots of Chineses round shells, sometimes interruppted by waves of shells and two of these famous very long Italian multibreak shells which were fantastic highlights. Although the first half of the show was maybe to slow in total, A.P.E. had some nice sequences where e.g. the fortress of Punta del Miracle was illuminated in red and aqua shells were shot the same time and later there were Salice Bianco (white chrysanthemums) shells in the air together with white aqua shells (how shell one catch this on video? ;)). The quality of the Italian shells was fantastic, multibreak, farfalle, stutata and these wondeful Maltese cross red bukett shells with white center, most of the Chinese material was very good too and they shot at least one big round shell (300mm?!) with perfect color changes which could have been of Japanese quality.

When the show started to end, the typical Italian steam train with single shots of multibreak shells, followed by single stutata in rotation with huge single round shells began to introduce to the finale. But, where the show was to slow in the beginning, the steam train could not reach its climax and was suddenly overlapped with a wild and massive finale. But the audience loved that finale with lots of really heavy salutes which blew us almost away.

So, in the end it was a very impressive show by A.P.E. PARENTE which in my oppinion only failed to be this years winner because of its script with a slower first part and the not perfectly timed finale...

  16. [07.07.2005] PIROTÈCNIA ANTONI CABALLER S.A. - Spain (Valencia)

The day of the shooting by Antonio Caballer from Valencia promised to be fine but in the evening the air humidity was very high and furthermore the wind came exactly from the opposite side of the spectators. These two conditions together caused huge amounts of smoke that were blown in front of the following effects so that almost the total display was heavily effected by the smoke.

Nevertheless AC offered a fine typical Valencian style display which was opened by a perfect digital stepper sequence with comets, mines and salute shells of 90 sec. duration. During the display AC used furthermore some "Italian elements" like cylindrical shells shot in rotation with round shells. They had a sequence with barock elements (5 front pieces with tableaus of fountains) which was nice but I think to far away from the spectators to be honored. Of course we saw aquatic shells and lots of mines, candles and cakes supporting the levels below the aerial shells. The display ended with a massive finale and some "shock waves" of salutes which were very much appreciated by the spectators.

This was a beautiful display presenting the Valencian tradition in the international competition of Tarragona and I am so sorry for AC that this well designed and perfectly shot display was spoiled be the smoke that one could not concentrate or deeply enjoy the show. The only criticism for me as a jury member was the quality of the big caliber round shells which break very hard but unsymmetric and contained much to less stars (or all the stars were blown out from the bursts)...

  17. [08.07.2005] TAMAYA KITAHARA ENKATEN CO., LTD. - Japan

After the display of Antonio Caballer was destroyed by the smoke, on the following day the weather was not perfect too with high air humitidy but the wind came from the sea so that the smoke was always blown very fast to the side, out of the view of the spectators. Good luck for the Japanese company TAMAYA because otherwise with their way of shooting a display nothing could have been seen anymore after a few seconds...

Two years ago in 2003 the Japanese company Marutamaya Ogatsu shot a calm, typical Japanese fireworks display with lots of extreme beautiful original Japan round shells of perfect quality. But the Japanese slow way of shooting was not honored, neither by the jury nor by the public so they only made the last place in competition.

This year the Japanese company TAMAYA was somehow smarter. The display was covered by the Spanish company IGUAL and those guys know for sure, what makes the people enjoy in Tarragona.;) :D
Although TAMAYA brought some original Japanese shells and they even had 5x12" shells and furthermore they shot five pieces of 12" aquatic shells (the biggest caliber of aquatic shells seen in 16 years Tarragona competition), they gave up the traditional Japanese fireworks and shot a massive and fast display with lots of Asian shells of lower quality. The opening of the display with countless peony and other mixed colored shells in the air and on the water at the same tame, which lasted more than 3 minutes, made me think that they pushed the wrong button (the display was shot with Pyrodigital) or had some wrong cable connections so that they did fire the finale or even most of their total display at once. But they didn't - after this "introduction" they continued to shoot sequences, often with lots of shells in the sky. The most beautiful picture for me was made with wonderful brocade willows (10-pointed chrysanthemums), where some of them contained red blinking stars - this was pure Japan ;)

Somewhere in the middle of the display the large aquatic shells were shot. As expected they reached much larger distances than the normal aquatic shells. I remember the effect as a kind of "Mother and Sons", so some star bukett inside the large shell with heavy salutes. As they were shot during the normal display and they exploded because of their distance besides me and not in front of the camera I could not catch them on video.

The finale was a very long brocade chrysanthemum sequence where the sky was filled more and more with shells, supported by colored salutes and finished with a wave of white chrysanthemums. After the massive introduction into the display the finale was much more calm and elegant and traditional Japanese.
