  6. Report: Display of PyroMagic (HongKong)

[IMG] PYROMAGIC PRODUCTIONS LTD. (Hong Kong)

So, yesterday the first fireworks show of the 15th edition of the display competition in Tarragona was shot by Pyromagic coming from Hong Kong. Although one had to worry all the day because there was a lot of rain before the show, the weather during the fireworks display was almost perfect without rain, light wind and low smoke...

The fireworks started - conform with the competition rules - with 3 thunders and a set peace with the letters "CARREFOUR" in honor of the main sponsor. The set peace looked totally different from those from last year but worked perfectly.

The setup on the fireworks area devided mainly in three front positions with mines, roman candles and cake boxes and two main positions with the mortars for the shells, where most of the mortars where on the right side of the area. Many mortars where set up in V-shape angle.

The display itself was as expected in "Asian style" but fired digitally with Pyrodigital firing system. The Asian style I would describe as fronts of mines or candles or cakes boxes and above waves of upto 8 shells of the same effects in small calibers or 2 shells of 150-300mm. Without checking my videos again I can not tell if the announced 170 shells in 200mm and 33 shells of 300mm really were shot - but there where a lot of big caliber shells used in this display. When firing mines with waves of shells it was similar to the "Japanese Wide Scale" style with fronts of mines and then skyfilling shell bursts. The effects where peonies, many brocade chrysanthemums, palm trees, crossettes and few other effects.

The starting of the display with this "fronts with shells above" style was very interesting but one could say that during the show the where no real changes in rhythm or in the way they shot their effects. The digital firing system could have been used for more accentuated sequences during the show.

The were some sequences with skyfilling bursts of brocade chrysanthemums of high quality which I liked most. The quality of the other shells were good Chinese effects with some bright colors.

The final crescendo was well accepted by the audience, although the was a failure in the firing cues which fired small star cakes/shells after the salutes waves.

  7. [IMG] [IMG] PIROTEKNIA ASTONDOA (Spain, Basque Country, Areatza-Villaro)

Yesterday the fireworks show of Astondoa from Bask County was shot at good weather conditions - again there was no rain but high air humidity and a slight wind.

After the "CARREFOUR" set piece, which looked like those last year ;), the Astondoa display was a somehow "classic" display as shot often in former times. This is no criticism because this "classic" display had lots of fine ideas to present their effects!

Different from the Pyromagic display there were no waves of shells shot with fronts of mines/cakes below but they used e.g. two set pieces with celtic (?!) signs which changed color from yellow to green to red to white strobe. One of the two set pieces did not light in an half - so sorry. The set pieces were ended by some double rising girondolas.

They shot bengal carpets of aquatic shells and aquatic shells with brocade to blue bursts.

VERY interesting and seen very rare were lots of "flight rockets" (girandols) where 20-30 small rockets were fired from an iron rack almost simultaneously. Although small, these girandols filled the sky with slow falling colored stars or white flashes (last were used in the finale).

There were some nice stepper sequences with one shot comets.

The gold sequences in this display were nice too but not as bright and big as shot by Pyromagic.

Maybe one should have started the finally with the white flashing rockets before the salute shells because afterwards their effect got somehow lost.

Concluding I would say that this was a small but very interesting display with many different effects shot in a varied manner. The effects used were not as bright and big as often seen here at Punta del Miracle but the way of shooting made it an enjoyable display.

  8. [IMG] FESTIVAL FIREWORKS UK LTD. (United Kingdom)

Ohhhh, today was a cruel day for all who are involved in the Int. Fireworks Display Competition in Tarragona: the team of Festival Fireworks from the UK, the organiser of the competition and the fireworks fans/audience.

The day started so good: perfect weather conditions with clear sky and a good wind in the correct direction. The team of Festival Fireworks was working hard since 4:00 h in the morning - they brought masses of mortars and hundreds of hundreds one shot comets, candles, rockets with bamboo sticks, aquatic shells and more... This was intended as one of the biggest displays seen here. The fireworks material was bought from Valencian, Italian and Chinese manufacturers - all well known for their quality products.

When I visited the fireworks area in the early evening most work was already done. The setup looked very professional and everything was already secured with alu foil. There was still lots of electrical connections to do, but the FF team was working fast and no time problem should have occured. Everything looked like a giant, perfect organized and very interesting display.

The three saluts and the set piece "CARREFOUR" introduced the display on time. Then - nothing happened anymore. The audience began to shout and whistle and it was obvious that some problems with the digital firing system FIRE ONE must have happened. After some pause - one could clearly see torch lamps running over the firing area - suddenly some wave of shells bursts in the sky. The problems seemed to be fixed. But the start of the display was somehow wild mixed and not the way fired as it was intended. Another pause... Some small effects here, the rockets there, some aquatic shells fired, then again a wave of quality peonies. Another pause, some fans of colored mines, then the show stopped totally.

Something was burning and the fireman had to distinguish.

Rumors say that the firing system was not working at all from the beginning of the show. The effects the audience could see were fired manually. I hope that the rumors of an injured team member are not true and my good wishes belong to that joung company.

The show was planned and organised in a perfect manner, the set up was fantastic - but in the end everything went wrong and maybe more than 80% of the show have to be pulled out of the mortars before the following company will arrive at the firing area at 6:00 in the morning.

If there are news about the health of all team members and the reasons for the failure I will write it here.

I am so sorry for the team of Festival Fireworks...

  9. UPDATE to the Festival Fireworks situation:

Now it is for sure: the FireOne digital firing system did not work for a single shot, the reason for the failure is unknown at the moment.
All effects we could see in the 8 minutes of the show were fired manually with torch fires.

When firing some fan-shaped mines one 41 year old member of the FF team got burned in his face in 1st degree. My wishes go especially to him and his family - please become healthy again soon!

After starting at 4:00 h in the morning, working hard all the day, the FF team had to take away all mortars and all effects not fired off the firing area till 8:00 h in the morning of the next day - so they worked for 28 h without pause.

This could have been a true winner display - I wish the Festival Fireworks team that they get the chance to show their talent soon with a fantastic display...

  10. [IMG] *** INFORMATIONS IN GERMAN ***

    Hallo Pyros,

Int. Feuerwerkswettbewerb in Tarragona:

Was war geschehen?

  11. [IMG] [IMG] ARCO IRIS S.L., FUEGOS ARTIFICIALES (Spain, Pais Valencià, Real de Montroi)

Yesterday the display of ARCO IRIS from Valencia was shot. ARCO IRIS is related with TURIS from Valencia, who is known for typical Valencian style fireworks with perfect colors in a big variety, high brillance and very good diversaty of effects.

This attributes describe yesterday`s display perfectly. ARCO IRIS showed an impressive, typical Valencian display with lots of different effects. E.g. they had a big caliber shell with tubed stars changing from green to red color to titanium whistling to fierceful screaming. They had a sequence with wonderful gold glittering to blue roman candles shot horizontally into the sea and above shells with weak bursts and long burning stars of the same effect.
One should not forget sequences with multibreak aquatic shells and a giant 350mm round shell of fine golden rain stars falling into to the Mediteranean Sea - wonderful!

The starting of the display with stepped one shot comets and the end with fronts of color to salute mines prooved the use of PYRODIGIT digital fireing system. All the other display did not show typical digital fireing sequences.

A small criticism has to be mentioned for a approx. 150mm round color shell which broke in very low height.

All in all this was a very enjoyable display with everything the audience wants to see - therefore after the big final crescendo they gave the team of ARCO IRIS an huge applause.

  12. [IMG] ORZELLA, FIREWORKS S.R.L. (Italy, Trevi nel Lazio)

The last show of this year´s competition in Tarragona was done by the Roman company ORZELLA. Light rain in the evening made one fear a little but few minutes before the display the rain stopped and a very slight wind blew in the correct direction...

The setup of the Italian company was different from most of the others before at Punta de Miracle: the mortar racks were concentrated on the positions in the lower level of the firing area only. So all the space of the higher level was empty without any fireworks. Near the sea at the lowest level very few roman candles, cakes and mortars for aquatic shells were set up.

I must admit that I was a little shocked because of the few mortars at only three positions. It seemed to be impossible to fire a 20 minute lasting show with that little material...

But ORZELLA showed the audience a good display, which started typically with three multibrake salute shells. Maybe the first half of the display was somehow "light", but the Italians understood to build up an impressive rhythm from delicated Asian effects like crossettes or figure shaped shells shot slowly and accentuated changing to the Italian way of firework displays with heavy salutes underlining e.g. farfalle shells, spider web multibreaks and stutata followed by big caliber round peonies.

Somewhere in the middle of the display a sequence had an very surprising effect: the aquatic shells shot in that sequence burnded definetly UNDER WATER with yellow greenish lights before the shells popped up to the water surface to burn as a titanium fountain - simply fantastic!

The final crescendo was something one should be afraid off ;) because of the low height of the shell breaks with deep and heavy salutes which sounded like dangerous mortar bursts. At least two shell breaks happened indeed much to low/on ground so that the company had to be punished two times by the jury.

The audience loved this display and the Italians from the ORZELLA team had a very good beginning with their first display in Spain - I am sure there are more to come in future.

  13. 2004 - final official result

Here is the final official result announced by the Ajuntament de Tarragona today at 12:30 h:

[IMG] PYROMAGIC PRODUCTIONS LTD. (Hong Kong)

    not voted
[IMG] FESTIVAL FIREWORKS UK LTD. (United Kingdom)

Because of the failure of the digital firing system FireOne the display of Festival Fireworks from UK was not voted. The reasons for the malfunction of two (!) FireOne controllers is not known till now. Martin Winter and his team was officially invited to come back next year to proof their art at the 16th International Fireworks Display Competition in Tarragona - I am sure this will be an overwhelming display...

  14. [IMG] *** INFORMATIONS IN GERMAN ***

    Hallo Pyros,

Feuerwerkswettbewerb in Tarragona.

Juli, sechs Abende.

    Gruß und Schuss
