TARRAGONA COUNCIL HAS PRESENTED THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR <<CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS>> OF TARRAGONA 2006 IN A VERY SPECIAL CALL

The organization of 17th Tarragona International Fireworks Contest, headed by Mr Carles Sala, member of the City Council of Tarragona, has presented the rules for the 2006 extraordinary edition: Champion of Champions. This call is restricted for the winners of six previous editions. A very scrupulous care in the specifications and the increase of the budgets has presided the preparation of this contest of the Mediterranean. The contest will take place between the 3th and 8th July.

The technical services of the City Council of Tarragona as well as those of the associated institution from the previous year, the City Council of Granollers, represented by Francesc Sala, have prepared special specifications for an special call. The rules contemplate not only the process of selection of the companies, but the characteristics of the different displays. The companies that will have option to participate are the winners of six previous editions. The organization has noticed the possibility that, if any of these companies could not attend the call, the one classified in the second position that same year would be selected. Therefore, the organization has already confirmed six displays for 2006 edition.

The winners of six previous editions have been three Spanish companies and three international ones. The Spanish ones are Pirogestió (Igual group), Ricardo Caballer, and Arco Iris (Turís group). The international companies are two Italian factories - La Rosa Lorenzo and Francesco Pagano (IPON)- and a Japanese corporation, Tamaya. The companies should send their documentation before 10th February, to be analyzed by the Selector Board on 13th February. A draw will take place in the City Council of Tarragona to decide the order of shooting on 15th February. Both the pyrotechnic companies and the media are invited to attend this draw.

Economical conditions

Carrefour company will be the main partner of the competition again, that joined seventeen years ago. Each participant will be paid six thousand euros more than last year, and all the prizes have also been increased. Thus first prize will be nine thousand euros, apart from being awarded the public firework displays that will take place during the Santa Tecla Festivities, in September to the value of 39,840 euros. The second prize will be doubled: six thousand euros. The special prize for the best Spanish company from the City Council of Granollers festivities increases until 18,000 euros. These improvements, demanded by specialists and pyrotechnicians, will contribute to guarantee a very exceptional edition.

International interest

The organization of the Champion of Champions and Tourist offices have already been asked about the contest from different countries: Holland, Germany, England, Sweden, Denmark, France or the United States, and also from other parts of Spain, like the Canary Islands and Basque Country. It’s said that the six participant companies will offer best of their products and designs, so an increasing interest has waked up between the professionals and fireworks fans. For that reason, this edition will be a wonderful professional pyrotechnics market.

The rivalries will be favored by the hard struggle between the great Spanish companies, but also between the two Italian participants. But Mr Carles Sala has also insisted on the powerful Japanese company, so it is not possible to discard to any of the participants in the fight for the three prizes. Two historical opponents, Ricardo Caballer and Francesco Pagano, will fight again for Champion of Champions like in the first edition eight years ago, when Pagano won.

Finally, this year the jury will offer daily the total score, so that the importance and consideration of Tarragona contest can continue growing.

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE TECHNICAL COMMITTEE TO SELECT
THE PYROTECHNIC COMPANIES APPLYING FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE
XVII INTERNATIONAL FIREWORKS DISPLAYS COMPETITION

“CIUTAT DE TARRAGONA” ,
CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS SPECIAL DISTINCTION

In the City Council of Tarragona, at 14:30 on Tuesday 14th February 2006, a meeting was held by the members of the technical committee to select the pyrotechnic companies that are to participate in the XVII International Fireworks Displays Competition “Ciutat de Tarragona”, CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS SPECIAL DISTINCTION.The members of the committee were: Carles Sala Roca, delegate councillor for youth and festivities; Julio Cadena i Gutiérrez, municipal engineer; Robert Esteve Rodón, manager of CARREFOUR, S.A.; Jaume Ollé Tries, pyrotechnics enthusiast; Paco Cruz, cultural manager of the City Council of Granollers; Jordi Bertran i Luengo, Head of the Technical Committee for Cultural Management ; Carme Navarro Prats, delegate secretary.

The following pyrotechnic companies applied at the General Registry Office of the City Council of Tarragona for participation in the announcement reserved for the first prize winning companies in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005:
  • PIROGESTIÓN S.L. / GRUP IGUAL, from Vila-Rodona, Catalonia
  • LA ROSA FIREWORKS S.R.L., from Bagheria, Sicily, Italy
  • PIROTECNIA RICARDO CABALLER SA, from Olocau, Valencian country
  • GAMMA-P, from Kassel, Germany and Catania, Sicily
  • FUEGOS ARTIFICIALES ARCO IRIS S.L., from Real de Montroi, Valencian country
  • TAMAYA KITAHARA ENKATEN CO., LTD., Shinei machi Isesaki City, Japan
Mr Jordi Bertran presented the applications of the participating companies and the committee evaluated the conditions of each of them. The committee agreed to accept the six applications.

Since one of the participants has presented a technical report that contemplates the widening of the setting up and firing area with the use of several catamarans to put candles of up to 50mm and such catamarans would be provided by the same participating company;

Since the safety distances with respect to the area for spectators are respected, as this widening would be seawards:

Since this aspect does not appear in the Specifications for the 17th International Fireworks Displays Competition “Ciutat de Tarragona” but the committee takes it as an improvement;

The Technical Committee has agreed :

  1. To accept this use, as long as no resolution against it is produced by any of the other responsible authorities.
  2. To communicate this decision to the other participants, as it is a condition that had not been included in the specifications. This will be considered as one more possibility for artistic design, like the use of aquatic fireworks.
  3. To open period for applications with a deadline on 28th February so that all those participating companies that want to offer this effect can present it to the City Council of Tarragona as a complement to the previously presented report.
Once the session had finished, it was agreed to announce to the selected pyrotechnic companies the draw that will take place on February 15th 2006 at 11:00 at the conference room of the City Council, to decide the order of performance of the selected companies.

With no more matters to deal with, the session was closed at 18:00, to which I testify as delegate secretary.

The president
The delegate secretary

17th International Fireworks Displays Competition “Ciutat de Tarragona”, Champion of Champions Today in Tarragona a draw has decided the order of participation of the pyrotechnic companies taking part in the 17th International Fireworks Displays Competition “Ciutat de Tarragona”, Champion of Champions.

Today, 15th February, the 17th International Fireworks Displays Competition “Ciutat de Tarragona”, has been presented at a press conference in the conference room of the City Council of Tarragona. Information has been provided about the 6 participating companies, which will be the winners of the six previous competitions, as this year we have the Champion of Champions competition. All the companies except one –as it’s explained further on- have accepted to take part in this Champion of Champions competition.

At the same press conference, a cooperation agreement has been signed between the City Councils of Granollers and Tarragona in order to renew the agreement signed in 2005 stating that: the pyrotechnic company from the Iberian peninsula with the best classification will also obtain the “Trofeu Blancs i Blaus” (White and Blue Trophy), which gives them right to fire during the local festivities of this town in the area of Barcelona.

Finally, a draw has decided the order of participation of the different companies during the competition that will take place in Tarragona from 3rd to 8th July 2006.

The press conference was attended by:

  • Carles Sala, delegate councillor for youth and festivities from the City Council of Tarragona
  • Francesc Sala, deputy mayor of the City Council of Granollers
  • Robert Esteve, manager from Carrefour Tarragona, main sponsor of the competition.
Pyrotechnic companies and order of participation:

As it was mentioned before, the announcement was only open to the winners of the six previous competitions. That is to say, we will see the best fireworks of the 35 displays we have seen during the last six years.

The technical departments of the City Councils of Tarragona and Granollers (as associated institution since last year) wrote special specifications for a special competition too. Regulations include the selection process of the companies and the characteristics that will rule the different displays.

As it happened eight years ago, on occasion of the first Champion of Champions, the organisation foresaw the possibility that, if any of the companies could not attend the competition, it would be substituted by the company that had obtained second place on the same year. This guaranteed, on the one hand the high quality level of the competition, and on the other hand, that the number of displays would be of six.

The winners of the six previous competitions were three Spanish companies and three from abroad. The three Spanish companies were: Pirogestió (from the Igual group), Ricardo Caballer and Arco Iris (from the Turís group). The foreign companies were: the Sicilian La Rosa Lorenzo, Francesco Pagano (IPON) from Naples, and the Japanese Tamaya.

Finally, five of the six companies have applied for participation. Only Pagano will not be able to come due to an accident at their factory last year. They will be substituted by the company classified in the second place that year: the Italian-German company Gamma P.

The order of participation established by the draw will be the following:

  • Monday 3rd July: Tamaya Kitahara Enkaten, from Japan
  • Tuesday 4th July: Pirotecnia Ricardo Caballer, from the Valencian Country.
  • Wednesday 5th July: La Rosa Fireworks, from Sicily, Italy
  • Thursday 6th July: Pirogestió / Grup Igual, from Catalonia
  • Friday 7th July: Gamma P, from Germany and Italy
  • Saturday 8th July: Fuegos Artificiales Arco Iris, from the Valencian Country
Prizes

The competition is still sponsored by Carrefour, which has faithfully contributed to the competition since its very beginning seventeen years ago. Economic contributions for each pyrotechnic company have been increased by 6,000 euros more, while all prizes have also been increased. Now the first prize is of 9,000 euros. The second prize has been practically doubled and now gets up to 6,000 euros. The special prize given by the City Council of Granollers to the company from the Iberian Peninsula with the best classification and which consists in being assigned the firing of the pyrotechnic displays of the local festivities of Granollers, has also been increased and now is of 18,000 euros.

There’s no doubt this improvement of prizes that had been asked for by specialists and by pyrotechnicians, will contribute to guarantee a week of truly exceptional fireworks.

International expectation

Both the organisation of the Champion of Champions and different cooperating companies have been receiving enquiries about the competition from countries such as Holland, Germany, Britain, Sweden, Denmark, France or the USA, apart from Spain and for example the Canary Islands and the Basque country. Each of the six participating companies is expected to offer the very best of their products and designs, which has aroused even more interest among professionals and fireworks enthusiasts. For this reason, the competition of Tarragona will be, now more than ever, the international fireworks fair.

An innovation this year will be the daily publication by the jury of a press release with the punctuation obtained by the display offered the previous night. This way, the transparency and reliability of the competition will keep increasing.

TAMAYA KITAHARA ENKATEN CO., LTD.
Shinei machi Isesaki City, Japan

Japanese fireworks started in the 17th century, during the Edo period. Since then, they have developed a lot and today they combine artisan manufacturing with the use of computers. Tamaya Kitahara Enkaten has fired, apart from Japan, in China, USA and Europe. Outstanding are their displays during the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Popular Republic of China in Liuyang, Hunan and in Beijing, both in 1999; at Chinese pyrotechnic festivals in Lian Yang and Shanghai, both in 2000 and 2001; Hunan in 2001 and 2002; Dalian and Jilin in 2001; in Singapore in 2000 and in Hawaii in 2001. Also, they have won prizes at international competitions like the Mercè in Barcelona in 2003 (first prize) or at the second Qatar competition in 2004 and 2005, where they also won first prize.

In 2002 they also achieved the world's Guinness record of strings of fireworks, when they fired a 21.097 Km long string. This company is the supplier of the Disney Park in Tokyo (Japan).

At present they hold place number two at the Champion of Champions of the competition in Tarragona, which they got in Tarragona in 1999.They won the competition in 2002, which let them be classified for this year's special competition. They also got first prize in 1994.

Wednesday 5th July, 22:30
LA ROSA LORENZO FIREWORKS S.R.L., from Bagheria, Sicily, Italy
Artistic Direction: Lorenzo La Rosa

In the world of fireworks, the South of Italy is like Valencia in Spain: there are over 3,000 manufacturing workshops in that area. Most of them work for big companies from the North or produce material used at family and popular celebrations. Therefore, a craft workshop structure has been kept which produces material of extraordinary quality.

La Rosa, backed by three generations since 1945, has promised a display based on the great Italian shells, which have made them win several prizes at competitions all over their country.

They won the competition in Tarragona in 2001, both on the official section and the prize from the public. Also, their wonderful display during the Santa Tecla festivities on 23rd September, and all the other pyrotechnic shows they offered (tronada, entrance of the city flag and of the relic of the patron saint…) rounded up a great year for La Rosa in Tarragona. However, they could not repeat that success at their second participation in the competition the following year. In 2005 they were one of the guest companies at the International Pyrotechnics Symposium that took place in Otsu, Shiga, Japan, where companies from all over the world participated during a week.

Thursday 6th July, 22:30
PIROGESTION S.L. / GRUP IGUAL, from Vila-rodona, Catalonia
Artistic Direction: Claudio Rozalén and Patxi Igual

In 2000 Pirogestión became the first Catalan company to win the Fireworks Displays Competition of Tarragona, which consolidated their territorial and artistic presence in Catalonia and in Spain. Later, they would integrate into the group Igual, the oldest company in Catalonia, as it was founded in 1880. This group of companies has over a century of experience, along which they have obtained many prizes and distinctions. For example: eight first prizes at Donostia, three first prizes at Montecarlo, four first prizes at Cannes (France), one in Bilbao, one in Knokke (Belgium), one at each of the French competitions at Antibes, Chantilly and St.Brevin des Pins (France), one at Hannover (Germany), and the gold Jupiter at Montreal (Canada) in 1988 and the Champion of Champions at the same place in 2003. Since 1981 they have been firing the pyromusical during the Mercè Festivities in Barcelona and since 1986, the great New Year display at Valparaíso (Chile). Also, they were in charge of the pyrotechnic part of the opening and closing ceremonies at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Barcelona in 1992, and of the Fòrum de les Cultures in Barcelona in 2004.

Friday, 7th July, 22:30
GAMMA-P, from Kassel, Germany, and Catania, Sicily
Artistic Direction: Joachim Schon and Antonino Vaccalluzzo

This relatively new company was born in 2001 after joining the efforts of S.R.L. Pyrotechnics, from Sicily and Joachim Schon/Artistic Fireworks Performances, from Germany. The Sicilian have been working since 1950 at the foot of the Etna volcano and usually take part in the St.Agata celebrations in Catania, while Schon has been a pyrotechnician since 1987 and has performed fireworks displays in Marrakesh, Marbella, Nice, Mykonos, Santorini, Zurich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin or Brussels. The two most important displays they have fired are at the Millennium Fireworks in Palermo (Italy) and at the International Festival of Valencia in October 2002. Their fireworks are characterized by a splendid combination of beauty of design on the sky and an extraordinary quality of the materials used, which don't have plastics in their manufacturing. This makes them a much more ecological product.

They won second prize at the competition in Tarragona in 2003 and an ex aequo of the prize from the public with two more companies. According to the specifications of the competition, the fact that the winning company that year is not allowed to take part because of a recent accident in their factory, has let Gamma P take part in the competition this year.

Saturday 8th July, 22:30
FUEGOS ARTIFICIALES ARCO IRIS S.L., from Real de Montroi (Valencian country)
Artistic Direction: Vicent Cervera Domingo

Founded in December 1996 in the Valencian Country, this company has the experience and work of its directors and managers, who are also in charge of the Valencian Pirotècnis Turís. Arco Iris has basically performed in towns and festivities of the area of Valencia. Therefore, they will be offering a show with the characteristics of Mediterranean fireworks: colourful and a powerful sound. They have taken part in many Moors and Christians celebrations, like the international touristic interest festivities of Alcoi. Also, they have been at the largest bonfire in Valencia, in the town of Canals. They won first prize at the mascletades competition in Castelló in 2000, and have also taken part in the competitions of Bilbao and Donostia.

This company won the competition in 2004, both the official prize and the prize from the public. Their performance during the Santa Tecla festivities was splendid, as they offered a brilliant display but also a n absolutely spectacular entrance of the Braç de Santa Tecla.

Tarragona welcomes Fireworks Champions
From 3rd to 8th July
www.tarragona.piroart.com
www.tarragona.feuerwerk.net

From Monday 3rd July to Saturday 8th July the city of Tarragona, in Catalonia, Spain, will hold the "Champion of Champions" of the International fireworks Displays Competition "Ciutat de Tarragona". This is the seventeenth time this competition is held in Tarragona. The participants will be the winners of the six previous competitions. This year's special programme will bring to the Miracle beach at 22:30 every night a selection of candidates with excellent standards: the fireworks champions. The companies Tamaya from Japan, Gamma P from Germany, and La Rosa Lorenzo from Italy, together with the Valencian Ricardo Caballer and Arco Iris and the Catalan Pirogestió/Grup Igual, will compete for the most prestigious pyrotechnics award on the Mediterranean. 60,000 spectators attend performances daily, in one of the most crowded events in the city of Tarragona. Apart from the official jury, formed by several European specialists and journalists, the public also have the opportunity to give their opinion and award the Great Prize from the Public.

Both the organisation of the "Champion of Champions" and several cooperating companies have been receiving enquiries about the competition from different countries, such as Holland, Germany, England, Sweden, Denmark, France or the USA, apart from other areas of Spain, like The Canary Isles or the Basque Country. There are accredited televisions from Japan, Holland and Germany. Each and every one of the six participating companies is expected to offer all their best products and designs, which has aroused a bigger interest among professionals and pyrotechnics enthusiasts. For this reason, this year's competition in Tarragona will be more than ever an international pyrotechnics exhibition.
More official news with explosive masses will follow soon...

Positiv [Report] TAMAYA: Japanese Power

TAMAYA: Japanese Power

TAMAYA, who first participated last year in Tarragona competition combined in 2005 far east tradition with the way of fireworks shooting which is loved by the local audience. And they decided to try it one again – never change a running system!

Although the weather was perfect during the day with clear sky and slight wind, in the evening the wind calmed down and almost stopped. As expected the high air humidity caused massive smoke development which filled the sky within minutes and extremely spoiled the display by TAMAYA.

Besides this TAMAYA’s show was a very well done opening of this years Champion of Champions edition of Tarragona fireworks display competition in Tarragona. TAMAYA, who was again technically supported by the Catalan IGUAL company, perfected their style they showed in 2005. Again, the opening of the display was an extreme powerful shooting of Asian coloured round shells, heavily supported by lots of aquatic shells which burst along the beach of Punta del Miracle, sometimes in close proximity to the public. This way they almost fully occupied the whole sky with endless waves of shell bursts. During the whole display they kept this monotone but fierce rhythm with lots of different shell types. One saw beautiful falling leaves, pattern shells, brocade crowns with red twinkling stars, shell of shells with multi coloured small flowers, 8-pointed chrysanthemums, colour changing peonies with pistil and more typical Asian effects, sometimes but not always of true Japanese perfection and quality. Almost all mortars upto 150mm contained more than one shell and additional effects like star mines or big whistles with unusual sound. Although the display was fired with the Pyrodigital firing system TAMAYA avoided digital stepper sequences apart from one short sequence.

The finally was again introduced and supported by aquatic shells but then changed to a short sequence of countless brocade shells finished by bright white chrysanthemums with lots of small salutes.

The public liked the display a lot and applaused TAMAYA for a powerful display which was not traditional Japanese, but which shows the high level of this years competition and what the spectators can expect within the next five days..

Positiv [Report] RICARDO CABALLER: Digital fireworks art

RICARDO CABALLER: Digital fireworks art

How cruel can weather be! After heavily spoiling yesterdays display by Tamaya today the smoke development was even worse. The slight wind blew towards the audience waiting on the beach of Punta del Miracle and this way drawned most effects in the massive smoke for view of the spectators. During some parts of the show and especially in the finally absolutely nothing could be seen anymore.

But it was a fantastic show, as far one can judge. RICARDO CABALLER (RiCaSa), worldwide very well known for their fireworks displays today had an home play in Tarragona competition. And as expected they presented brilliant pyrotechnic material in an huge display with an extraordinary perfection in the use of modern digital igniting systems. As Tamaya yesterday they controlled the show with Pyrodigital but as known from RiCaSa they made extensive use of stepper sequences, especially with comets and mines but with shortly timed aerial shells and for some set pieces too. Normally this kind of shooting is known for pyromusical displays but wisely used and integrated in a non music show digital sequences can be very enjoyable.

It is impossible to describe such an elegant show design but some elements and criteria can be pointed out. First they used their best own and some Italian made effects with delicate colours in a big variety, glittering and shining gold and silver, many different types of round shells with symmetrical bursts and hard breaking cylindrical shells with wide spreading like stutata and farfalle. Second they combined traditional Valencian build up of the single display sequences with precise digital firing and fine ideas like set pieces made of countless short burning fountains which danced along the whole firing area and were concluded with rising wheels. Last but not least RiCaSa shot in total a massive display with an enormous finale – which could not be seen but felt in stomach only by most spectators. The acceptance of the public was great though.

In comparison Tamaya with all their aquatic shells and simultaneous firing of aerial shells did have a better occupation of the sky and they deeply integrated the Mediteranean sea in their show. But both displays stand the high standard of this years fireworks display competition in Tarragona. If only the weather could be improved…

Positiv [Report] LORENZO LA ROSA: Authentic Italian rhythm

LORENZO LA ROSA: Authentic Italian rhythm

Today La Rosa from Sicily gave their performance at Punta del Miracle and where as effected by massive smoke formation as the two companies before.

The Italians showed what they are known and loved for: a rhythmic and loud display from the beginning to the very end where especially the sequences with big calibre cylindrical shells before the finale produced an authentic Italian steam engine. And they had a lot of original Italian made effects to offer. Starting from simple star bouquets with small salutes, to the beautiful farfalle with all the silver whirls, to lots of stutata shells which burst without effect but then suddenly fill the sky with dozends of spiders, peonies or very loud truenos. The most special effects where produced by “bomba de tiro”, big multibreak shells with 8, 10 or even more bursts of polyps or coloured stars, ended with a big star bouquet and an heavy final salute. This type of shells is especially made for very important events like competitions only.

Additional to the Italian material LA ROSA used Chinese effects like falling leaves, peonies and chrysanthemum shells, popping flowers and crossettes which always were shot in waves and were often supported by salutes. As aquatic shells there are two sequences made by silver or golden swimming fountains to mention. The biggest shells used in the display were four round shells with a calibre of 400mm which produced huge star bursts in the sky.

The finale was a steadily increasing crescendo by countless salutes which followed a pattern of rhythmically fired really loud salutes. Although this display, which was controlled by the two firing systems FireOne and Firemaster, used less material and maybe had less ideas then the two shows before, LA ROSA was the third company which fully proved the high standard of this years fireworks display competition in Tarragona. If only the weather could be improved…

Traurig [Report] PIROGESTION – It could have been fantastic

PIROGESTION – It could have been fantastic

After three days of massive smoke formation today Pirogestion was able to present their fireworks display under much better weather conditions with a good wind coming from the sea. This could have been an advantage in the competition, but some fatal problems with one of the two used firing systems, FireOne and FiatLux, totally destroyed the planned fantastic show.

Pirogestion, which nowadays belongs to the Catalan IGUAL group, invested enormous efforts to design and realize such a show, which maybe could have been compared to their giant display in Barcelona 2004 at the opening of the forum. They intended to use the total width of the firing area and even prolonged it with 11 pontoons, fixed in the sea parallel to the beach. Every pontoon was loaded with lots of roman candles, mines, comets and even shells, mostly arranged in fan shape. Several positions on land were prepared the same way and during the show all these positions would have fired simultaneously to produce an overwhelming front of effects, almost surrounding the audience.

But it should not be. Some undefined error in a firing system, maybe initiated by a flooded pontoon, caused a total failure off almost all front positions on land and most on water. In the beginning of the show and during some further passages one could recognize that the display did not run as intended, because it had some pauses and unsymmetrical firing of effects.

But the audience still could enjoy the show because Pirogestion offered very beautiful effects such as fine golden crowns with pastel red blinking stars, blending bright white chrysanthemums or a carpet made of Bengal flares on water. The amount of shells to be fired filled the whole firing area. They setup more than 80 shells with +200mm where six had a calibre of 350mm. The massive finale had a very long duration and culminated in “shockwaves” of countless heavy salutes and colour shells and almost let the sky explode.
