  9. Technical details

So, here they are - the official technical details from this years participants:

  10. [Report] TAMAYA: Japanese Power

    TAMAYA: Japanese Power

TAMAYA, who first participated last year in Tarragona competition combined in 2005 far east tradition with the way of fireworks shooting which is loved by the local audience. And they decided to try it one again – never change a running system!

Although the weather was perfect during the day with clear sky and slight wind, in the evening the wind calmed down and almost stopped. As expected the high air humidity caused massive smoke development which filled the sky within minutes and extremely spoiled the display by TAMAYA.

Besides this TAMAYA’s show was a very well done opening of this years Champion of Champions edition of Tarragona fireworks display competition in Tarragona. TAMAYA, who was again technically supported by the Catalan IGUAL company, perfected their style they showed in 2005. Again, the opening of the display was an extreme powerful shooting of Asian coloured round shells, heavily supported by lots of aquatic shells which burst along the beach of Punta del Miracle, sometimes in close proximity to the public. This way they almost fully occupied the whole sky with endless waves of shell bursts. During the whole display they kept this monotone but fierce rhythm with lots of different shell types. One saw beautiful falling leaves, pattern shells, brocade crowns with red twinkling stars, shell of shells with multi coloured small flowers, 8-pointed chrysanthemums, colour changing peonies with pistil and more typical Asian effects, sometimes but not always of true Japanese perfection and quality. Almost all mortars upto 150mm contained more than one shell and additional effects like star mines or big whistles with unusual sound. Although the display was fired with the Pyrodigital firing system TAMAYA avoided digital stepper sequences apart from one short sequence.

The finally was again introduced and supported by aquatic shells but then changed to a short sequence of countless brocade shells finished by bright white chrysanthemums with lots of small salutes.

The public liked the display a lot and applaused TAMAYA for a powerful display which was not traditional Japanese, but which shows the high level of this years competition and what the spectators can expect within the next five days..

  11. [Report] RICARDO CABALLER: Digital fireworks art

    RICARDO CABALLER: Digital fireworks art

How cruel can weather be! After heavily spoiling yesterdays display by Tamaya today the smoke development was even worse. The slight wind blew towards the audience waiting on the beach of Punta del Miracle and this way drawned most effects in the massive smoke for view of the spectators. During some parts of the show and especially in the finally absolutely nothing could be seen anymore.

But it was a fantastic show, as far one can judge. RICARDO CABALLER (RiCaSa), worldwide very well known for their fireworks displays today had an home play in Tarragona competition. And as expected they presented brilliant pyrotechnic material in an huge display with an extraordinary perfection in the use of modern digital igniting systems. As Tamaya yesterday they controlled the show with Pyrodigital but as known from RiCaSa they made extensive use of stepper sequences, especially with comets and mines but with shortly timed aerial shells and for some set pieces too. Normally this kind of shooting is known for pyromusical displays but wisely used and integrated in a non music show digital sequences can be very enjoyable.

It is impossible to describe such an elegant show design but some elements and criteria can be pointed out. First they used their best own and some Italian made effects with delicate colours in a big variety, glittering and shining gold and silver, many different types of round shells with symmetrical bursts and hard breaking cylindrical shells with wide spreading like stutata and farfalle. Second they combined traditional Valencian build up of the single display sequences with precise digital firing and fine ideas like set pieces made of countless short burning fountains which danced along the whole firing area and were concluded with rising wheels. Last but not least RiCaSa shot in total a massive display with an enormous finale – which could not be seen but felt in stomach only by most spectators. The acceptance of the public was great though.

In comparison Tamaya with all their aquatic shells and simultaneous firing of aerial shells did have a better occupation of the sky and they deeply integrated the Mediteranean sea in their show. But both displays stand the high standard of this years fireworks display competition in Tarragona. If only the weather could be improved…

  12. [Report] LORENZO LA ROSA: Authentic Italian rhythm

LORENZO LA ROSA: Authentic Italian rhythm

Today La Rosa from Sicily gave their performance at Punta del Miracle and where as effected by massive smoke formation as the two companies before.

The Italians showed what they are known and loved for: a rhythmic and loud display from the beginning to the very end where especially the sequences with big calibre cylindrical shells before the finale produced an authentic Italian steam engine. And they had a lot of original Italian made effects to offer. Starting from simple star bouquets with small salutes, to the beautiful farfalle with all the silver whirls, to lots of stutata shells which burst without effect but then suddenly fill the sky with dozends of spiders, peonies or very loud truenos. The most special effects where produced by “bomba de tiro”, big multibreak shells with 8, 10 or even more bursts of polyps or coloured stars, ended with a big star bouquet and an heavy final salute. This type of shells is especially made for very important events like competitions only.

Additional to the Italian material LA ROSA used Chinese effects like falling leaves, peonies and chrysanthemum shells, popping flowers and crossettes which always were shot in waves and were often supported by salutes. As aquatic shells there are two sequences made by silver or golden swimming fountains to mention. The biggest shells used in the display were four round shells with a calibre of 400mm which produced huge star bursts in the sky.

The finale was a steadily increasing crescendo by countless salutes which followed a pattern of rhythmically fired really loud salutes. Although this display, which was controlled by the two firing systems FireOne and Firemaster, used less material and maybe had less ideas then the two shows before, LA ROSA was the third company which fully proved the high standard of this years fireworks display competition in Tarragona. If only the weather could be improved…

  14. [Report] PIROGESTION – It could have been fantastic

PIROGESTION – It could have been fantastic

After three days of massive smoke formation today Pirogestion was able to present their fireworks display under much better weather conditions with a good wind coming from the sea. This could have been an advantage in the competition, but some fatal problems with one of the two used firing systems, FireOne and FiatLux, totally destroyed the planned fantastic show.

Pirogestion, which nowadays belongs to the Catalan IGUAL group, invested enormous efforts to design and realize such a show, which maybe could have been compared to their giant display in Barcelona 2004 at the opening of the forum. They intended to use the total width of the firing area and even prolonged it with 11 pontoons, fixed in the sea parallel to the beach. Every pontoon was loaded with lots of roman candles, mines, comets and even shells, mostly arranged in fan shape. Several positions on land were prepared the same way and during the show all these positions would have fired simultaneously to produce an overwhelming front of effects, almost surrounding the audience.

But it should not be. Some undefined error in a firing system, maybe initiated by a flooded pontoon, caused a total failure off almost all front positions on land and most on water. In the beginning of the show and during some further passages one could recognize that the display did not run as intended, because it had some pauses and unsymmetrical firing of effects.

But the audience still could enjoy the show because Pirogestion offered very beautiful effects such as fine golden crowns with pastel red blinking stars, blending bright white chrysanthemums or a carpet made of Bengal flares on water. The amount of shells to be fired filled the whole firing area. They setup more than 80 shells with +200mm where six had a calibre of 350mm. The massive finale had a very long duration and culminated in “shockwaves” of countless heavy salutes and colour shells and almost let the sky explode.

  16. [Report] GAMMA-P: Filigree Italian pyrotechnics

    GAMMA-P: Filigree Italian pyrotechnics

Gamma-P’s first attendance at Tarragona competition in 2003 convinced the jury that much so that only Pagano/IPON earned higher points in that year. But because Pagano as the winner of 2003 was not able to return, the Italian-German cooperation Gamma-P as the second winner represents the participating company for this years Champion of Champion competition.

Under almost perfect weather conditions Gamma-P celebrated a fireworks display which was not based on huge amounts of pyrotechnic material to outcompete other displays, but which totally relied on the beauty and purity of their own material, which is produced by the Italian part of the cooperation, Vaccalluzzo from Sicily. The effects presented in this display totally differ from the bright and intensive colours which often dominate fireworks displays. Almost all effects consisted of some fine variations of golden, silvery or other metal colours like bronze, brass or copper, often associated with small stars with discreet pastel colours. Through approximately the first half of the display these delicate pyrotechnics were shot in some kind of calm pictures where roman candles arranged in a fan shape were topped by first single, then more and bigger shells of the same type and colour. Then slowly the rhythm of the display changed and became faster by shooting more Italian type cylindrical shells in different waves, but always without being to aggressive. Even the stutata and multibreak shells had their own beauty, always with these fine colours and not that hard breaking like known from other companies. The finale itself was an overwhelming front of golden polyps with crackling, supported by very loud salutes and lots of roman candles, which steadily increased in size and noise to end in several waves of stutata shells and digitally stepped one shot comets. The biggest shell used in this wonderful display was a 300mm cylindrical stutata and it was controlled by the Pyroleda firing system.

  18. [Report] ARCO IRIS: Valencian color waves

    ARCO IRIS: Valencian color waves

After a full week of fireworks today the 17th International Fireworks Display Competition in Tarragona ended with the sixth display performed by the Valencian company ARCO IRIS. Like the five companies before ARCO IRIS too invested extra efforts for this special edition of the competition to convince the jury and the public. So they presented a truly perfect Valencian style display, loud and colourful, with traditional setup and increasing force of the single sequences with similar effects. Additionally they decorated it with several passages with mine and bright comet fans, often topped by salutes or they shot these effects digitally stepped. Almost through the whole display the aerial shells were accomplished by mines, what was very beautiful. Furthermore ARCO IRIS presented special round shells of big calibre as single shots, which effects were especially arranged for this display, eg. shells with coloured or tailed stars which changed to whistles or small salutes. For the display, which was controlled by the Pyrodigit firing systems, ARCO IRIS mainly used their own manufactured quality material. The audience enjoyed the show a lot and applaused several times between and of course after the powerful finale which ended with several waves of mines and heavy salutes.

Although the smoke formation of the first half of the Champion of Champion edition was so massive, this could not spoil the fascination coming from these masterpieces of fireworks art, which all were of extraordinary quality in choreography and effects.
