Other General questions from non german speaker

  1. Ok so i am an erasmus student and i study physics at Bonn Uni. I will be here for 5 more months or maybe a whole year.

I am from Greece and i also make fireworks there although because of legal problems i couldnt make many tests. I also have worked in Greece for 2 weeks in a fireworks company

So i really want to have the fireworks licence you can get here in Germany. So i wonder if here in bonn-cologne there are part time jobs to work in a firework company.

Also if there are any meetings/ workshops etc.

Btw are helpers being paid or its just voluntarily work?

    Thanks.

    P.S. I hope i will learn german soon :)

  2. Hi,
first of all, since you are from Greece ..... where's our money?

    Having said that: Welcome!

First question. When you say that you make fireworks, do you mean you produce the devices (shells, rockets) yourself or do you just fire them off? Producing items is a very restricted field in Germany and it will be quite hard to actually succeed in doing this legally. Setting off fireworks is rather simple. New years is coming up and on the 31st evening pretty much everyone will be setting off some kind of firework. You should be able to satisfy any craving in a few months time!

If you want to get the license to shoot professional fireworks, that's going to be a little bit tricky. You would need to submit to a backround check and I am not sure whether they can actually access your record from Greece. That said, getting a fireworks license is also a lengthy process and you would need to help out at a number of fireworks before being able to actually take the course and test. Both course and test are in German only, so your language skills should be appropriate.
Your best bet would be to write to a few local companies asking if you could help them out and describe your background. No, you won't get paid but gain experience as well as an understanding of the German laws and regs. Fireworks is a part-time job for most people anyway, so don't expect that any company would be able or willing to hire you unless you brought a tremendous amount of experience with you.
It all depends on how long you are going to be staying in Germany but your best bet is to just stick around with a fireworks company and help them out (and have fun on new years).

  3. Da fühlt er sich trotz Deiner kompetenten Antwort und egal ob Witz oder nicht im Forum sicherlich gleich viel willkommener.

  4. Thank you very much for your response ! I really find it very helpful :)

As for being Greek i knew i shouldn't add it to my post but i thought it would attract more answers :p And believe me i really dont know where your money are! I personally didnt ever received anything :p

Now, i make my own fireworks. Most are 2.5" shells with carbon or color stars. And i know that it should be really dificult here to manufacture fireworks so i am interested only in firing fireworks.

I ll try to find companies here in bonn - cologne area and send emails. I dont have enormous experience but i sure have fired many shells and i have understanding of what is going on :). Btw if anyone has in mind any big company name i would be very thankful.

Thanks again for your prompt reply!

    dEEcorPyro gefällt das.
  5. Finally someone to swap comps and manufacturing tips with. I usually do 3" to 6" round shells and have dabbled with a few lampares but am usually a fan of glitter, firefly and some more interesting garnitures.
Any chance to see you at the PGI this year?

Sorry, I'm from another area and can't help you there really but my suggestion would be to rather give them a call. Yes, I know it is hard if you don't speak German but the chance that you are deleting an email from some "weird, english-speaking guy" is quite high since there is a bunch of chinese manufacturers out there the want to sell you a shipment of junk and just write in English "hey, my best friend...".

    Just some good-natured humor!

  6. There's a really helpful site on this website, you can find it here: (Its for the area near cologne/Bonn - But you should still look where it is, and if you can reach them)
    http://www.feuerwerk.net/datenbank/index.php3?rubrik_id=4&subcat=27

It's basicly a list of all companys which have to do with fireworks, sadly only german. But you can use google translater, I guess.

  7. Schokopudding thanks for the answer! this helps a lot!

Boule i like very much the classic crysanthemum 6 and 8. Also glitter yes. On the crysanthem ones i sometimes
put aluminium or titanium and its great too. I have tried the veline colors since are quite easy to do. there arent the best but green and red is nice. I also like strobo stars with barium nitrate.

My 2,5" inch are also spherical. I had problems with priming my stars so especially the velines ones werent very good because of that. But if i could test more fireworks i could make even better effects. last time i was about to lit some shells i ended up at police department :) I live actually in the suburbs of athens which isnt the best place for fireworks! Too many people.

As for the PGI i dont know many things. Is this on Germany or elsewhere? And when? I would love to meet other people with the same hobby!

  8. Try to look up the old independence formulas. They are a tad harder to make but much more color intensive.

Well, Barium strobes can be tricky. I only got mine to shimmer and could not reliably control the strobe rate from batch to batch but had much more success with AP-based strobes but they seem quite sensitive to whoever makes them and to where you get your supplies. So, how did they work for you?

There is a little open secret called "fencepost prime" that should give you the desired results.

Look, I don't want to be a sticker for rules but at least I got a place to do my stuff legally, even though not really often. Worst thing that can happen to the pyro community is, if someone gets arrested for "making bombs" even though it was just some small fireworks since it will be used to tighten regulations and for you personally, the fecal matter will be hitting the rotatary impeller in quite a terrible way. Now, it could be that the police was not aware that you had the necessary permits but just in case you don't I would suggest we don't elaborate further in this forum.

Nope, that is in the USA - usually in a different place each year. Think of it as "pyro heaven" with a week worth of classes and seminars and a bunch of shows.
